Thematic maps are made to reflect a particular aspect of the geographical area on which they are defined. They can focus on physical, social, political, cultural, economic, sociological and any other variables related to a specific territory. Thematic maps are designed for a specific purpose or to illustrate a particular theme, in contrast to the general maps, in which a wide variety of elements coexist, such as the orography of the terrain, the constructions and the communication pathways with Chicago driving directions. among others. Vegetation map. Thematic map developed by the Department of Vegetal Biology (botany) of the University of La Laguna on the current and potential vegetation of the Canary Islands through a research contract called "Cartography of Canarian vegetation". The elaboration of the map is based on a topographic map to scale 1:20,000, Orthophotos to scale 1:5,000 and field work.
Geological map. The continuous Digital geological map of the Canary Islands was carried out by an agreement between the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME) in the year 2003. For its elaboration, the National Geological Map (MAGNA) was used as basic information. The map consists of the following layers: dikes, structures, fractures, contacts, points and lithologies.
Land-occupancy map. The Soil Occupancy map (year 2002) is created by photointerpretation of the Orthophoto color 1:25.000. It delimits the same texture and color enclosure, bearing in mind the legend and the established coding rules. A map enclosure can group one or more classes, forming associations or mosaics. An enclosure can be composed of a maximum of four units or mosaics, where in turn each one of them can group four different classes. The map aims to facilitate the rapid interpretation of the density and characteristics of the current occupation of the territory.
